INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE IN EDUCATION ART AND ESSAY CONTEST ***DOWNLOAD ENTRY FORM HERE*** (Adobe Reader required) Sponsored by: Sindi Wasserman, National Board Certified Teacher Founder of: The National Association for the Advancement of Caring Teachers www.naact.org "If we are to reach real peace in the world, we shall have to begin with children" ~ Gandhi Rules and Description: ***This contest is open to all students in 9 - 12 grades as well as community college students and those enrolled in the California State University system who live in or attend school in the cities of: Montclair, Pomona, Chino, Chino Hills, Upland, San Dimas, La Verne, Rancho Cucamonga, Fontana, Claremont, and Ontario, Fullerton, and San Bernardino, including students whose primary language is other than English, students enrolled in Special Education classes, and students who are in alternative education programs as well as those enrolled in mainstream regular education classes. The purpose of this contest is to promote the concept of peace in our communities, families, and throughout the world.. ***Students whose artwork and essays are entered will have their work judged by teachers and artists representing each community, and winning entries (including honorable mentions) at each grade level, will be posted on the National Association for the Advancement of Caring Teachers website. the "Grand Prize Winner of the Art, Poetry, and Essay contest will be publicly recognized in the Spring of 2006, as well as have their winning piece posted on the naact.org website." Students wishing to obtain additional information about "International Day of Peace in Education" may consult CTA'S website at: www.cta.org or contact contest sponsor and CTA member Sindi Wasserman at: (909) 628-8811 ***All entries must include a signed release by the student's parent or guardian, include demographic information about the student, and a verification from the student's instructor at school that his/her art work is original. Thomas Street in Pomona in the Arts Colony. Questions: (909) 628-8811. ***Only one-dimensional artwork will be considered. Mediums available to student artists wishing to enter the Visual Arts Category are: charcoal, pencil, watercolor, pastel, acrylic, oil, or mixed media. Please do not frame entered artwork, however a border around the artwork is recommended. The deadline to submit entries is November 30, 2005. Essay minimum requirement for 9-12 students is 1000 words, for community college and university students it is 1500. Poetry has no limitations, apart from a request that language not include any obscene references. Written work must be proof-read for grammar and spelling and must include the student's signature. The theme for all categories is simply "peace". "A society is as great as the educational preparation we give to the next generation. And the world will be exactly as good and peaceful a place in which to live as the understanding we give to that generation of the world as a global village." ~ Zarathustra The student should try to convey through written words in essay format how children can make their families, their communities, or the world more peaceful. "Artwork should depict a peaceful theme conveyed through the student's chosen medium. Original artwork will be returned to the student no later than January 10, 2006 if a self-addressed and stamped return mailer is included with entry."
